Tents offer easy compartmentalization, sexy for black market, and thats all there was at the time
Exactly this. Tents offer control and convenience. Could I build a light proof room in my basement? Sure! Do I have the time and energy for that? Not at all. Tent go up fast!

That being said, ive run many HIDs in tents, and I have heat issues with some LEDs anyways so...

Man I read that and instantly realized how little I know about lighting .... I use a 30 dollar LED to start seedlings and get clones going, but haven't ever flowered out a tent before. Sadly the 30 dollar light I have, is not just starting to die, but they apparently don't have them anymore.

Which kind of light is the one that's REALLY warm and requires a Heat Sink on the top ? The in law has one, but we don't use it at all. I remember opening the tent one day when he had his plants under it, and it legit felt like I'd opened a Sauna ... Can't imagine trying to use that for anything other than middle of Winter with no heater setup.
Mr. Marketing man at work.

That light is led.

I am still pruning Twinklehawk and PrimalSundae 5. should have done it a little sooner but I was betting (incorrectly) flower set would go quicker for these.

9/9 just pressing soil into the cell. Glad that worked cause I don't like how the top 1/2 in or so of the peat pucks get all mushy, don't break down, don't allow root growth, and seem to harbor bugs (not necessarily pests but creates an imbalace). Spent most of the day transplanting and cutting away the tips of those pucks, still have a few plants to do.

but isn't anything I can't recreate with led, produce less heat and grow more better weed for the same or less energy cost.

True.

I prefer the lovely Hue that falls somewhere between stubbornness and poverty.
For the time being, my crops are illuminated in the 'Sour Grape' spectrum.

The photo is what they call a 'high Bay Lighting fixture'.
Typically 400 W metal halide.
I have five of them -in various states of disrepair.
Not so much a heat sink as such. It is a stacked, iron plate, Transformer, to maintain operating voltage.
But yeah, scalding hot.

They can be modified, as remote fixtures. I have a couple of them with patch cord between the Mogul socket, and the transformer. As such, I can hang the lightweight Luminaire up top, whilst harvesting Heat from the ballasts, that I have situated under the bed.

In my limited experience, 400 watt MH is my favorite for veg. I can run a 5x5 area for 6 weeks+, and everything stays under 12 inches tall.

They kind of remind me of the "Reptile Lights" that you need for keeping certain Lizards and Snakes as pets really. I use to have a lot of odd pets (I say that, whilst having predatory Catfish as pets currently LOL) but I'll have to snap a picture once I'm back at the house later on, as there's this huge light the in law has, and it has a legit heat sink right on the very top portion, and I've got no idea what kind it is. We normally use a simple LED board most of the time, though I've put serious thought into doing an indoor run in the back garage, during Winter, and just using that monster light since, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't need a heater in there with that running. The thing is a monster, and weighs a lot too. My first time seeing this thing, I noticed the heat sink over top of it, and thought "Man this is going to run HOT if they slapped this on it..." makes me wonder if they used thermal paste on it too.

The MH light you mentioned, it really keeps them smell ?? Shit you're shoving me down a rabbit hole now LOL.

Won't work on the plants per se. Will definitely generate heat though, just expensive.

I used to flower und a 400MH, it's what I learned on, mixed with a 250 hps it was best results of that time. The writing is on the wall though with manufacturers pulling from the bulb making biz and selling leds instead.

Might end up as my permanent test spot. The boys look nice too.

Hey, I totally agree, not until a few years ago I started using LED with HPS. It's nice to have two different spectrums as far as I'm concerned. Mh and hps together are insane. As far as the plants were concerned

I had a had time mixing the but I think that's mostly cause I had too much led for a single 315. I was also messing around with mono reds and uvb/c leds. The growlight Australia boards were actually designed to pair with a cmh cause of their popularity over there I guess 🤷‍♂️

Centigrade ?

I was not prepared !

8C nights, and 29 days ?
Looks like you brought my weather home with you.
I am peeling off laundry all day. My backyard is littered with jackets and Toques.

A sitting chairs essential equipment. At first it kind of looked like an aquarium observation chair.
I took another glimpse, and it kind a looks like you're visiting a plant in prison.

The one I'm talking about that has a heat sink on there, I'm not sure what kind of bulb it is, as this part is still more than new to me. But I do know a heat sink when I see one. I'll be out there this afternoon and need to snap some shots for my journal anyway. Just have to find the light in the back garage. It's like 2 feet or more across, pretty heavy, and with a heat sink on the top, and generates so much heat that I'd never seen anything like it.

I actually was sitting here trying to think of how NOT to sound as incompetent as I am, with different styles of lighting, but I honestly have no real experience with anything outside of the LED light we use. So look stupid again it is LOL....

OK, so, for CMH, and HPS, I get that they aren't the same kind of lights, but in terms of real world differences, if someone was used to LED lights only, and they ended up using one of those you mention, does the plant really react a lot differently ? I mean, I imagine there's obvious differences, but I wasn't around back before LEDs, so I have no actual way of comparing what these lights do differently.

The only time I've seen anyone show pics of different types of lights being used for a grow, was actually in a journal on here. My ability to ask this without it being convoluted isn't very good to say the least.

Time for a pollen viability test.

These have been in my garage since Dec. 2020, one with silica gel, the other with molecular sieves, they are in another coaster sized container with silica gel in it.

I'll dust later this evening once it cools off using @Buck5050 's bag a branch method.
