How the hell did you get into Finnish neofolk?

Well, you start by not blowing your YouTube wad in 15 seconds and giving them a chance to....Finnish.... :)

If I manage to give you a black eye over the internet due to heavy facepalm let me know; I'm doing a study to see if it's possible to give someone a non violent black eye :)

@Kanzeon - Only got about halfway through the Tenhi so far, but I
like how it's kind of a tone poem, sort of descended from Astral Weeks
in a weird kind of way. I imagine that's a huge rabbit hole you could go down. ?

Here's my fave Finnish group:

Yeah, a tone poem is a good way to put it, but they're also just fucking obnoxiously talented in terms of instruments too. The second half of Saatue is just... perfect. Like it's hard for me to find words for it. That song moved me in a way that music hasn't in a long, long time.

This is another one of theirs that's just "fuck you" good.

Tasavallan Presidentti is interesting! I can hear a bit of their influence in later Finnish stuff like Insomnium and Moonsorrow.

I checked this one out and like it, but Souto is more in my lane - a little less folk-y, maybe?
I really appreciate music that has a lot of breathing room, and this stuff truly is evocative
Maybe it's because I'm a southerner, but Finnish winters must be a motherfucker.

Really appreciating instrumental pieces as I grow older.
Can't remember where I first heard this, but it has joined my "essential collection".
The name is perfect. This tune on headphones while out on a stroll does indeed get me struttin'.

Loved everything I've heard from these guys as well.

I was just reminded of this wonderful memory from my childhood and figured I'd share.

My folks had a compilation LP of country songs from this era and I nearly wore it out. This is one of the tunes that will be forever burned into my memory.

I don't know if anyone else is watching these old Midnight Special clips
they've put up on youtube or not, but it's right in my wheelhouse.
I clearly remember (which is a feat for me) watching Steely Dan on
MS with my best bud - stoned to the bejeezus belt on Mexican ditch weed -
this would have been summer between junior and senior year of high school.
What I remember so vividly is us marvelling at what we both called the
"Ugliest Front Man" of a band we'd ever seen. Fagen looks like a ghoul here.
But Skunk Baxter kills the whole thing. This is before Steely Dan got established as a power.

Shane MacGowan would like a word

My ex and I used to argue whether it was MacGowan, or Lemmy and his warts who held the title.

I've seen quite a few Midnight Special vids while watching reactions. It looks like it was a pretty cool program.
This is the first one that comes to mind. (I'd forgotten that Helen Reddy was an Aussie)

The thing that's hard for you youngsters ( :ROFLMAO: ) to grok is that we didn't really know what bands looked like back then.
Maybe you get some really crappy B&W stills in a Cream magazine or something, but seeing them live on TV was brand new.
Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert got 'em right in our basement den - amazing at the time!!!
And, this was a shitty console, cathode-ray tube tv that you had to get up and turn the knob to change channels.
If the wind was blowing right, we could pick up Chattanooga, which seemed much more cosmopolitan than Knoxville... to us.

Your dudes are ugly, no doubt, but Shane was born the same year I was, so he was also in school.
Lemmy was old enough, but was just the bassist in Hawkwind at the time - not a front man.

HIt Parader and Circus were our main sources of information on metal back in the day.

I never had access to MTV or anything close. The CBC had a 1/2 hour show that came on after school and would show a few music videos, but it was generally pop garbage.

I try to tell young people about the joy of finding an obscure album by a favorite artist in a record store, or the devastation when your favorite tape got eaten. The amazing ride a concept album could take you on, etc.

Having almost the entirety of music at your fingertips is cool, but we've definitely lost part of the experience
