I've gotten semi caught up into the skunk quest, I know it's a long drawn out quest amongst the crowd. But I'll give it a shot for the best. As far as some of my favorite older strains it's hard to say what they are. Back when we really had no idea what they were, nobody really named most of the stuff we came across. I used pull a few buds from pop's stash from time time🤫, and collected seeds when they rarely showed up from his stuff. I can conclude on growing out those seeds that most of it is was sativa dominant. I had grow spots all over the now developed urban area. Never had much success growing that way. From them saved seeds I grew out 4 female 9foot sativa trees that got ripped by a friend back then while they were only just starting to flower. I'd like to say that there was alot of NL and skunk genetics floating around back then also. I believe the bikers had a lot of good stuff coming in around regularly as well, they for sure moved a lot of crank back in the 90's. Majority of what everyone else had was Mexican brick, when we did get named weed it wasn't that common and it didn't always live up to any hype. I still remember busting out a bowl of the old man's weed while waiting for the bus on the first day of high school. The one friend was leaning up against the wall when he took one hit, slid down onto his heels and passed out. He then woke up and started coughing up smoke wondering what and where. Needless to say he went home, we stayed high most of the day at school from that single session. We followed up with our buddy after school, he said he couldn't figure out how to unlock his front door for quite awhile. I haven't been exposed to many dispensaries either, so it's still hard for me to differentiate between kush, chem, OG and such. I haven't been a regular smoker for awhile, it only a weekend thing. Pairing joint with a 6pack will always be my favorite. But as far as flavors, I long for a bag of skunky/pine green sticky bud, that sticks with you for hours and doesn't couch lock. But rks is up to interpretation, most pot of the the Era I am referring to, all had a degree of skunkyness. Then the was a cut that my buddy's father grew for a number of years. It was very loud skunk, not sweet. It was very sticky bright lime green with dark red pistels when cured. It was a sativa leaning high that would cause some trippy effects. His dad passed a few years back, but my friend has a first hand recollection of that plant, I just haven't caught up with him on it yet.
