And the bear. That's the problem, people fuck up but the critters pay the price.
Yeah those people....bearly.... got away. Lol. The spray thing.... they essentially seasoned their dog :( like if I cried before being eaten by a Jaguar it'd probably be like "fatty AND salty???? Winning!" . Then again they weren't trying to pet the bear, so there's some difference. But just...Bearly.... haha

“The bear still did not release the dog and carried it into the woods,” the post said.

There's no way those dogs should have been off-leash in that park - of course, the article - taking the humans' side - doesn't spell out the leash laws of the park, but a commenter quoted them. So, the humans are clearly at fault in this scenario, but did they even get a ticket or a fine? Probably not. At the very least, they should have had to foot the bill for trapping and euthanizing the bear. What a waste.

So, yeah... I feel worst for the bear, then the dog, and the humans are a distant third. I mean, it must have been traumatic to have your dog carried off by a bear, but to have it have been entirely your fault and caused by your carelessness and cavalier attitude towards wildlife?

Hate to have to live with that.

This is more an Alberta story than a Canada one. I've posted before about the iconic Burger Baron non-chain of restaurants, owned and operated primarily by Lebanese immigrants. I find it quite interesting, and judging by the interest in expanding on earlier documentaries, so do others.

Based on the popular short film “The Last Baron,” THE LEBANESE BURGER MAFIA is crowd-funded feature documentary about Burger Baron, a rogue fast-food chain with mysterious origins, a cult following, and a secret pathway to the immigrant dream.

Awesome. :) That's the intention of a lot of these posts, just sharing stuff that you wouldn't know if you don't live here, fleshing out a bit of Canada beyond the stereotypes of lumberjacks and polar bears and maple syrup.

I know you guys get very little coverage of Canada in your news and then it's often just propaganda from one side or the other trying to advance an agenda. Here I share stories that catch my eye that I feel somehow spotlight the Canadian experience, from as many different perspectives as possible, warts and all.

I've recently discovered my new favorite American. John has decided to learn about Canada. John is a kind, intelligent, very respectful, and inquisitive man. I've really enjoyed watching him learn, and learning along with him.

Here he and his daughter watch the story of a Canadian Hero.
-----------------
Terry Fox's story always hits me hard, so fair warning if you are a marshmallow like me. ?

After losing a leg to cancer in his late teens, he set out to run across Canada to raise awareness and hopefully, $1,000,000.00 for cancer research.

After running over 5,000 km on his stump, in pain with EVERY STEP, the fucking cancer spread to his lungs. He was forced to end his run, eventually dying of that horrible disease, shortly before his 23 birthday.

"If I don't make it, the Marathon of Hope better continue".
He left us with those instructions, we're doing our best.

Over $750,000,000.00 has been raised for cancer research in his name, and that number will always continue to rise.

edit: over $850 million has been raised in his name as of May 2022

It does my heart good when someone puts everything into a cause, and when they pass, they are remembered; not for their downfalls in life, but for their want to change other's lives, and raise actual awareness and funds to do exactly that. Heart string tugger story there.

I saw Rick Hansen during his tour.
Good Memories.

I did school fundraising for Terry Fox.
Kids are still doing it.

I had to ask my daughter specifically, and the answer is -YES

35+ years later : some smart-ass kid still gets in trouble for doing the Terry Fox Shuffle.

Yeah, that was me.
I thought it was a delightfully insightful tribute ; however we had Karen's in the '80s too

Another Canadian treasure, another Gord, has passed on.

The legendary folk musician died Monday evening in Toronto, according to his publicist. He was 84. Born in Orillia, Ont., Lightfoot is regarded as one of Canada’s greatest songwriters and storytellers, with a career that spanned decades.

They gave him a statue, he said "gesundheit ". That's a Canadian for you, bad jokes and self-deprecation. :)

"I haven't had anyone call me up and tell me 'it's a stupid song' ."
AvantGord- a Gord ahead of his time.
His song was getting banned, before I was born.
I'd forgotten bout that one. Gord had so many powerful songs.

'Billy, you probably have heard some first hand stories of these events. It took place in your back yard.
For those that can't see the CBC player:

And the inspiration for the song:

I think my cousin has a stick with his signature on it.
The one and only Mr Hockey.
Gordie Howe Hat Trick

My favorite Gordie Howe story was about a charity game he played in his(I think) 60's. It was against a team of cops. One of them was playing rough and dirty, like the game mattered instead of being an exhibition. After this cop had gone too far one time too many, Gordie asked him politely to ease off.

The cop kept being a prick so the next time he went into the corner with Gordie, only Gordie skated out. The cop was carried off the ice.

Mr Howe was a gentleman, but if you pushed him, that Saskatchewan farm boy wasn't far beneath the surface. And a wise man doesn't piss off a Saskatchewan farm boy.

July 23rd 1967, 9123 12th street (now Rosa Parks Ave) West Side, second story in a "Blind Pig" (Blind Pig is slang for an after hours drinking spot) and Detroit PD raided these places a lot, and generally didn't have problems, but this night was to be different for everyone.

The old adage "When all things fails to unite the people, conditions will" rings hard here. Detroit PD weren't Police Officers in the true sense of the word, they were like the SS and treated people in a way that would have you in prison if you did it to a dog today. People think it was all about race, but plenty of white people were treated this way then too; the band MC5 talked openly about supporting the Rioters, and even hung a Burn Baby Burn flag off their house in Detroit during this time. Detroit PD would literally just beat people and club them in the head in those days, and on that July evening, everyone had enough, and let them know.

I've watched footage from the Riot, and got to see interviews with people who were there. I've been to the location it started on the West Side, and on Kercheval on the East Side where it spread from the West Side, and the murals that are still there to this day.

I have also seen reports that are truly heart breaking.... The last victim murdered in that riot was a little kid. The Dad was sitting near a window, and lit a cigarette, and the police thought it was sniper fire and opened fire on the window :(

I'm not a "total chaos" guy, but it is REALLY hard for me not to side with the rioters in Detroit. So many people were arrested and left to rot.... rights were ignored, it was bad. But they seemed to learn from it because, lemmie tell ya! You go where that happened and started back then and cops do NOT like driving around there.

There's two documentaries free on YouTube about Detroit, but they're age restricted and I'm not signed in to YouTube, but for anyone interested:

Detroit the Murder city
Rollin Detroit

They're about an hour and a half long, and explain what happened in Detroit.

Yeah I don't blame him; I mean if you're playing a game in that setting, there's no reason or call for acting like that. Glad it was sorted out LOL.

I kept waiting for some crazy old half frozen fisherman to run out onto the ice and start drilling ?

Too hot and too dry. It's getting bad out there.
Thankfully no fires near here at this time and cooler weather in the forecast, but lots of people terrified for the future right now in places like Drayton Valley.
Come on, rain!
