Don't circle hooks take the fun out of it I mean setting the hook is my favorite part...

If you like that part the most, there are options; Octopus Hooks! These are my go to hook honestly; You can set the hook by reeling down, or just yank the hook, and I've had excellent results.

I do have Octopus Circle Hooks from Gamakatsu too; You don't set those the same way though, as you mainly Reel down on them much like a normal Circle Hook, but the "sweeping" motion Amarok mentioned, is the way to go.

Personally, if you like setting a hook, I'd use Octopus Hooks. But, as Amarok pointed out; Circle Hooks are VERY unlikely to gut hook a fish, meaning you can safely release it without worry most of the time.

I like VMC and Gamakatsu the best, but grew up on them classic eagle claws. Mustad is nice too, I think I have those small gold live bait hooks by them.

Been using gammies for many years.. typically 5/0-7/0 only time I've used circle hooks is when dude gave me them by accident at the bait shop..they worked well for black sea bass fishing doing drifts with bait rod out of the rod holder.. my only complaint with gammies is the barb in recent years the barbs have been all different sizes in the same pack and break easily other than that great hooks.

First thing I do is wrap a lil wire around the top so my line doesn’t jump around the bait.



Then I add a trailer, in this case it’s my favorite big joshy

Then I add a 2/0 trailer


I also grabbed up a different style pencil popper from yo-zuri , just to see what it’s talking about

While adding the yo-zuri to todays box, I saw the hooks and feel like they’re kinda tiny, so I threw a #3 gamakatsu treble in the middle

Good luck. As a tweaker of lures myself, I love seeing the little upgrades others use. Alway looking for more tools for the toolbox. I like the way you wired that spinnerbait so the line doesn't slide.

Caught one little one, didn't have to deal with any crackheads, and spent some time bringing in a black bird that was drowning with a broken wing. I left him on the shore to figure the rest out. I only threw the spinner, will head out tomorrow to one of my go-to spots and see what I can pull.

I'll go take a weed picture real quick to try and keep this a grow journal. IDK why I always forget about the fishing thread.

I live right next to a fishery that has an 8 lb 2 oz state record. You catch a 5 lb smallie you don't ever forget it. What a blast . Check out wachusett reservoir if you get a chance.

Yeah it's pretty lame. Next place I live, the only reason I want to have to take a firearm with me fishing, is because of an apex predator, not a drugged out thief. You end up getting pretty good at working the urban cover i.e. shopping carts and bicycle frames tho.....
