I'd throw down some bones or prizes if we could somehow put together a fair way to do a Phenohunters fishing tournament or something. I know we all live in different places with different species, so there would have to be a fair way to do it, and make it fun. I was just thinking bout that this morning...

Until about a year ago, I never owned a scale, and for the most part, I had to take fish somewhere to get them weighed, so I rarely did it. The Carp that smoked my first Reel, I weighed on a regular scale so I knew it was huge. The Catfish I've caught, there's 3 I did weigh, with the largest being just under 14 pounds.

Largest Lake Trout was 13 pounds, but they really don't fight like a Catfish does so it wasn't too hard. We apparently have quite the Smallmouth fishery here in the Mitten; I've seen shows filmed here catching them, and I know they can get large with our waters, as most fish, when given a Winter season, live longer than the ones in the South.

It's funny because when you see a Bass get hooked on TV they end up jumping and splashing around, but the only fish I've had jump really, was a Sucker I landed a few years ago. Thing went NUTS LOL.

The scale thing, and not having one, has bitten me in the ass a time or two; About 4 years ago, I was fishing at the main River I go for, and I had 2 or 3 Rods set up.

After a while, I kept seeing a little hit on the tip of the Rod, but then it would stop, and nothing. I thought something was messing with my bait, so eventually, after a few more hits, I decided to check and see if my bait was gone.

I reeled in the line, and when it got about half way in, I realized a fish was hooked... Mind you I'm generally Catfishing so it was heavier gear, but I could see the line swirling in the water and feel a tug.

When I got the line up, I see a little Silver fish about 15 inches give or take, and I've got no idea what it is, and, worse still, it's gut hooked... I at first thought it was a White Bass, but it had no bars on it. I have no idea what it is at the time, and I'm sad because I know it isn't going to survive. For the first time ever I had to use my hook removal tool. It swallowed an Octopus hook, which had to be twisted out. "Fish Milk" is sprayed on me... I'm annoyed all around.

I know it isn't going to make it, so I put it on my stringer, and tie a different hook on. I decided to go with a Circle Hook in case another one grabs it.

I cast back out, and again, I'm getting these little hits. OK, well, at least I put a Circle Hook on, and this little species shouldn't be able to gut hook itself now I think...

Bro.... I reel back in the line, and I have another fish just like the first one, but like 18 inches long, and like 2 pounds or so. It has somehow managed to swallow a Circle Hook.... I'm in shock, and annoyed that I have TWO of these now and I'm not sure if they are legal to even keep, and I don't have my DNR book with me to check.

Eventually it was time to go, so I kept them. I get back to the house, and the Wife tells her Dad that I caught some fish, and I don't know what they are.

He looks at them and says "White Perch" and I'm like ahh, OK, we can eat that, so I clean them.

After I filet these things out, it dawns on me that Perch are NOT normally that size..... I go look up online White Perch, see that it is in fact what I caught.... Then I see the state record and my heart sinks.... I've at least tied the record with the second larger fish, and BOTH of them are Master Angler Award worthy..... *Sigh* LOL. It was too late though.
