There is a reason they are more popular with musicians than music fans. Their music is so complex that myself and most people aren't able to appreciate what they are doing.
For me, as a non-musician who spent a lot of time around players, it was always fun to see someone introduced to Rush or Zappa for the first time. I didn't have to understand the music, I just had to watch the expression on their face to know it was amazing stuff.
Now it makes sense... I'm too dumb to like Rush!

It may be as simple as I just don't like the timbre of his voice.
I knew dudes that were way into Rush, right from the beginning.
I seemed to go for more dissonant, jazz-inflected prog type stuff,
like King Crimson and Weather Report and the Krautrock stuff.
I certainly like Zappa's jazz phase - Hot Rats, Wawa Jawaka, Burnt Weenie Sandwich - that stuff.
