Birds and Blooms

Kind of a fishing post that kind of turned into a bird post... From the Fishing thread:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, it was a balmy 80 degrees with 99% RH at 7 am when Hughie went down the hill.
Shirt was soaked through by the bottom, and that's with the sleeves already cut out of it.
But, through no plan of his own, Hughie scored some powerful mojo on the walk in.

I'm an adherant to the First Folks' way of thinking about feathers.
I found 2 feathers this morning, and catching 100 fish couldn't have made me happier.
First up was a Downy Woodpecker feather, which is a pretty damn good one.

WoodpeckerDetermination, resourcefulnessIncorporated in rituals seeking guidance and overcoming obstacles

Then I found a Blue Jay feather, which while not as good as a Bluebird feather, still has lotsa good mojo
  • Blue Feather: Wisdom, clarity, communication, harmony.
So, yeah, I got into the Shoalies a bit, but I had to really problem solve to get to them.
Prolly sounds dumb, but Determination, Resourcefulness, and Clarity all played a part in finding them.

I challenged my self to wade to a spot over 100 yards across the river on the other shore, after striking out in several spots.
Visibility was pretty limited due to dirty water, but I ground it out and got across with but 1 slip. Jesus - tough.
And, there they were. Only got 8, but 3 of 'em were 17ers - not a huge fish, but a nice Shoalie.

And, as soon as it happened, it was over. Old man Hugh just up and ran out of gas. Too hot and too humid.
This doesn't happen very often, but today I was standing in the river, all the way over, and my voice said, "That's it, fuckface."
Marshalled my Feather Mojo, and got the fuck outta there, but, man, going up the hill 'bout did me in today.

I hate taking my phone, and I really hate trying to get pics with it - gonna get a H2O proof point and shoot.
These pics of the feathers are pathetic, but I don't care really.

Fellow feather collector here.

I have prize Orange'y Flicker feather
Occupies more space in my heart, than it does in the bin.

Also I have found a huge flight feather, all black, I think it may be from a turkey vulture

Native American Feather Meaning - The Full Guide

The Northern Flicker is, for my money, the most beautiful bird.
They remind me of a trout, with the speckles and shading.
No good flicker action at my house, though, which sucks.

I've had some really beautiful turkey, hawk, buzzard(!), owl feathers
- I try to give them to kids when I can. I love giving them to kids on
the trail and give 'em a little story, but I rarely see others when fishing.

I don't know what I think about taking feathers from dead birds...
Don't guess they need 'em any more! I've never done it. Dunno!

Northern Flicker is, for my money, the most beautiful bird.

Such flashy undercarriage, for a drab cloak. Always a shock of colour, when they take off.

I see them on the daily, I will observe them for both of us.

They posses unique qualities, not seen amongst the average backyard fare.
I enjoy how they tend to light on vertical surfaces. Most birds will descend onto a branch. Those Flickers can fly directly into a wall, and stick to it like Velcro.
A mouth like a bulldozer, they can clean out 10 ft of eaves trough, lickity split. I often see them emptying the cracks in the sidewalk.
,,, and the power! That bill must be carbide tipped. When they start preening my Elms, the bark and debris cascade down in a steady stream.

Got all those but the warblers here............but red and yellow finches are plentiful, :) I've got a couple of flycatchers too.
The female cardinal is one of my faves.......a very beautiful bird!

When I moved here, I spent a few years thinking the pine warblers were adolescent, female or wintering goldfinches.
But we got the goldies, too. No flycatchers around my house that I know of. I wish!

I’ve been putting mixed bird seed in an old feeder my parents used in their retired chicken coop.

IMG_1102.jpeg This beautiful sunflower popped up in the pit that my cherry tree is planted in. It faces my sliding glass door out to the backyard so every time I let my dog out or go outside it’s looking directly at me, reminding me everyday is beautiful and life is wonderful. A sign of resilience, perseverance, and the will to overcome all odds no matter the circumstances.

I believe this is Lucy the dove that has returned every year for almost three years now w her mate Henry (not pictured). My dad built this simple ledge in my patio to give em a safe place to nest away from cats, cuz we all know that doves are the shittiest nest builders ever; I’ve found nest attempts on an active gate like WTF why build a nest in a spot where humans are constantly using it and so easily accessible?? I got on a chair to look in the nest while she was out hunting for food and saw a few random twigs, her way of gussying up her new digs. I threw some weed stems and random seeds I found on my rolling tray up on the ledge for good measure lol 😆 I figured they wouldn’t use em cuz of my scent (or the weed smell) which is why I didn’t plop em straight into the basket. I swear they must be getting high cuz I schmoke right under em 😂

It’s twins! It’s also feeding time.

IMG_0896.jpeg
The next week I went out at night for a schmoke and I thought I heard some critter rustling around. Then 🪶🪶🪶FLAP FLAP FLAP 🪶🪶🪶 BONK BONK *PAH* the two teenagers were bashing around the walls n ceiling I was like WTF?? One managed to hop over the fence and the other looked injured. It hobbled around for a while until it also managed to get over the fence. I was hoping a cat wouldn’t get it.

IMG_0937.jpeg
At least one of em made it, perched on top of my Tuff Shed. A few days later I saw a pair that looked all “bad hair day-ish” sitting on the other fence, so it gave me hope. Mama Lucy was buzzing around too, but no sight of Daddy Henry. They stuck around for a week. They’ve been giving birth to twins twice per year. I hope to continue being their bed n breakfast for years to come.

"Many birds swallow sharp pebbles and grit and hold these rocks in a muscular part of their stomachs called the gizzard. The gizzard contracts and grinds the gastroliths against each other and against the food that the bird has swallowed"

So yeah , Sue may have a little "gravel in his guts".
